Motorola Droid: The Real iPhone Killer?

with 2 comments

Verizon recently unleashed the Google powered smartphone to the world, but the question still stands. Does it live up to the love-hate iDon’t commercial? Let’s find out. (Click Here to watch the iDon’t commercial)

Battery

Battery life is something iPhone users have complained about since the launch of the original iPhone in 2007. Motorola claims that it can last 385 minutes of continuous usage off of a single charge. That isn’t a big improvement considering I can last just as long, if not longer on my iPhone 3GS. That said, the fact that it is interchangeable is very useful, and is something the iPhone has been missing from the start.

Camera

The Camera on the alleged iPhone killer is a force to be reckoned with. It’s only its first generation, and it already has a 5 MP camera with flash and video recording capabilities. The iPhone has been through several different generations, and still only has a 3 mega pixel camera and just recently received video shooting capabilities with the iPhone 3GS.

Design

The Droid has a very nice and elegant looking design. With a full physical QWERTY keyboard, it still maintains that thin, non-bulky look we all know and love in the iPhone 3GS. The fact that it even has a physical keyboard is a big one-up for a lot of people.

Navigation

From what I’ve heard, the navigation system on the Droid is a HUGE step ahead of most smartphones. With turn-by-turn navigation, it makes it easier and safer to use the GPS system on the road. This is great for people that always get lost while driving.

Android Market

The Android Market is like that of the app store on the iPhone. Although it only has a limited number of applications and widgets at the moment, we can infer that it will grow fairly fast over the next year or two. With the iPhone currently having over 140,000 applications, there’s really no contest here.

Interface

The interface on the Droid is user-friendly, and easy on the eyes. With multitasking (something the iPhone has been missing from the start once again), you can run multiple widgets (another thing the iPhone has been missing from the start) and applications at a time. This is great because you can hop from one app to the other without losing the settings in the app you were in before. You can also post widgets to the phone’s home screen, and organize them in any way you like.

Overall, the Motorola Droid is a very nice phone. For a price tag of $199 with a Verizon contract it isn’t too shabby, but is it the iPhone killer it’s claimed to be? Very unlikely. I doubt we will be seeing a big shift in the smartphone market when it comes to the droid. Sure it’s a nice phone, but let’s face it. People just aren’t willing to switch to a different carrier and cancel out their current contract.
